Week 11-Web 2.0

Web 2.0 refers to the idea that the web is now a place where people can interact and collaborate using tools such as blogs, wikis, social networking sites etc. and is no longer just a place to view information. E-learning Tools for School is a collection of web 2.0 tools. (Click on the plus symbol next to the type of tools you are looking for then click on the tiny icon next to the name to view the site.)

For your post this week: Take some time to explore 5-7 tools in-depth and report back telling us your top 3 tools. Explain how you could see yourself using each tool with your students.

I tried some of the audio music making sites, kinda complex stuff. Then I tried the web design, which you had to create an account, so maybe I'll try again later. Then I tried joytunes which immediately had application galore to my line of work. The bad thing is that it costs money. It is a CD that you have to purchase. The demo was great though. I was shocked to see only one website under educational games! And that site started at K and those games were to hard for preschool... maybe even too hard for K! Under apps, I continue to be amazed by technology! There is an app called google sky map where you can point your droid phone to the sky at night and it will map out the stars and tell you which constellations you are viewing. I can't believe that even is possible!! Gowalla was kind of like geo caching or letter boxing, only it's an app on your phone. There was a Disneyland gowalla app where people can virtually stamp their smartphone to say they were at various rides and landmarks... fun! The only site I could use with my students is joytunes, but it costs money :(
I had trouble navigating this website - It was confusing trying to figure out which of the tools would actually be useful for me and I didn't particularly like the design (the +'s for expanding). Because I have an iPhone, I did like the links to the various mobile applications (Urban Dictionary, Google Sky Map), but I probably wouldn't use them at school. I like the idea of Issuu (self-publishing) and I could see potential in this. For example, having kids write books about social issues or friendship skills and then being able to publish them for friends and family. Like Cheryl said though, this website requires you to sign up, so I don't know (but am guessing so) if it costs anything. Some of the other tools I already knew about (social networking in particular). I did like their suggestions for people to follow on Twitter - I read some of their tweets and liked what they had to say. I think I prefer using other resource websites though...
