Week 3-King County Library System

Did you know that the King County Library System has numerous resources on its website for adults and children? By visiting the main page you will see many options for you and your students. Do you have a unit coming up? Don't be limited to the books at your local branch. You can place a hold on books from any location online. You will receive an e-mail when they are ready AND you can decide where you would like your books delivered. Choose from any of their locations!

There are so many ways you can use the King County Library website as a teaching tool and with students. Click on Databases then Kids to access several paid websites for free. Just use your library card number and pin! Visit the Kids Page to access book lists and reviews. Visit Good Books for Kids and rate the stories you have read as a class. Visit the Kidreads blog to comment on the librarians' reviews. Encourage families to read your ratings/comments and to use the site at home.

For this weeks post, explore the website then tell us what you found and what you plan to use in your classroom.

As a veteran KCLS user, I hadn't thought about using the website with my students other than ordering books to use in our classroom for integrated purposes. I don't teach reading or writing, so I am still grappling with the idea of using this resource in other ways than I already am. If anyone has great ideas in different ways to use the site for Integrated and math, I'm all ears (eyes?).

I went to the page for teachers, then homework help. Countries and Native Peoples seemed like a great place for your integrated unit. There is a math section as well. It would be fun to explore with students and find sites they could access at home to help them with homework.
I have used the system to reserve books before--what I did like is the Good Books for Kids link. I have avid readers in my class and I think this is a good resource for us to use during computer lab time for a quick "peek" to find something to read and peruse through the different choices. A good follow up for my class would be to post on Kidblogger what they found!
I looked at the KidReads blog and am so happy to have been introduced to such a neat resource!! I love that there are categories (adventure, non-fiction, gay & lesbian) that I can easily navigate to find books on specific topics. I often do "bibliotherapy" or use books as a tool to spark conversation wtih my students. This will make finding suitable books much easier!

In taking a look at this website today, which I have looked at before, I can find many ways in which I find it useful for myself. I have reserved books on the website and I love that feature! I don't see it as being very user friendly really for my first grade kids. But, I do see it as a great resource for parents. I think that I will share this information with parents who may not know about the resource. I also appreciate the reminder that it is there and the opportunity to go, once again, and check it out! :)

PebbleGo seems like a great site for researching animals. There are simple sentences and they talk about food, habitats and fun facts. This would be great for the Marine Life unit.
I always forget about the tumblebooks! My own kids love them! And now I see the bookflix sight. I know that parents would use it at home with their kids if they knew about it. So that is how I would use it... I would encourage parents to use it with their kids at home.

Thanks Cheryl! I am going to check that out for both my first graders and my kids at home. Sounds like fun!
